Description

Three CSX locomotives backing tank cars east into the Norfolk Southern Yard toward the Tate & Lyle wet corn processing plant, Decatur, Illinois USA.

Decatur is both a major rail hub and manufactuing center. Several heavy industries generate business for the cities major railroads: Canadian National, CSX Transportation, Decatur Junction and Norfolk Southern.

The panoramic view has some history showing Wabash's old concrete coaler built in 1930. This area is the old Wabash Rail Yards famous for the "The Bluebird", "City of Decatur" and "The Wabash Cannonball". The smokestacks are of the powerplant and the famous office building to the right is A.E. Staley's (14) story office building noted as "The Lighthouse of the Prairie".

The photo was taken 01/12/2013 on a cold day (20 degrees F).
The lead engine is the CSX #4799, SD70MAC, 2nd engine is the CSX #8145 GE Evolution Series ES44AC and 3rd is the CSX # 920 EMD SD40-2CSX.

We are lucky here in Decatur, Il, and well received by the railroads here in Decatur Il.
This photo was taken at the old parking lot of Wabash Station now an antique mall store.

These trains move slowly through this large switching yard. but the large Intermodels from L.A. To the East Coast have the rightaway moving through this yard at 50 to 60 mph.

i took this photo at about 30 yards. There are no fences or barriers and is open to the public.
